Importance of Clean Water For Your Health

Is A Home Water Filter System Really Necessary?

faucetWater is the essence of life. Drinking enough clean water is the first priority for mental and physical health. Proper hydration is even more critical during times of physical illness, therapy, and in the healing process, because detoxification requires a large amount of water to flush the harmful chemicals and toxins out of your body.

But the REAL issues surrounding drinking water has as much to do more with the quality of your drinking water as the quantity. As we are trying to flush out the unwanted substances/ contaminants from our bodies, are we actually adding more “poisons” from our drinking water in the process? If so that would be very counter-productive.

Unfortunately, all sources of drinking water, including municipal water systems, wells, lakes, rivers, and even glaciers, now contain some level of contamination. Contaminants range from naturally-occurring minerals to made-made chemicals and by-products, to biological agents such as bacteria, viruses, and cysts. It is well know that that even low-level exposure to these toxins over time, could lead to severe illness, organ failure, cancer and even death.

It's a sad fact of modern life that we must worry about the quality of something as essential as water. Unsafe water is obviously not just a third world problem.

My Personal Reverse Osmosis Experience

The system that I have been using for the past 4 years is the RO-45 from APEC Water Systems. I first heard about this system from a friend who had raved about her system and warned me that the basic faucet filter I was using was ineffective at removing contaminants. At first I was skeptical because the cost was more expensive than my existing filter, so why would I waste money on a fancy system when my basic filter seemed to be working well? Boy was I naive!

As I began to do research into Reverse Osmosis technology, I learned that most water filters only used activated carbon to remove chlorine, bad odors and taste. Many of the most toxic contaminants were not being removed at all! Since most water pollutants cannot be detected by taste, there is no way of telling how much contamination has passed through my faucet filter into my family’s drinking water in the past. I ordered my RO system online and waited with great anticipation.

I received the product within the same week of placing my order which was a nice surprise. All the components were securely and professionally packed and they came with a detailed installation manual. Following the instructions, I was able to install the system in a little over 1 hour without any problems. After a month of research I was finally going to get my first taste of RO purified water! But what if I didn’t like it?

The first sip was all it took to calm my fears. It’s hard to describe the taste as it had no flavor, but I can say that it was pleasantly fresh and crisp off the tongue. I did notice that it was a considerable improvement to the water from my old filter which probably did not fully remove the chlorine and other chemicals in the water. The RO water also tasted better than some brands of bottled waters which I have found can sometimes give off a hint of plastic chemical taste. In all, I would say the quality or RO water is very good and comparable to some of the better bottled waters I have had.

filterNow for the REAL test. Since the system comes with a free water testing meter, I was able to test my RO water, faucet-filter water, tap water, and name-brand bottled water to see the results. The regular tap water reading came out to 287ppm, faucet-filter water 265ppm, bottled water 30ppm, and RO water 11ppm. While I was shocked by the poor reading of my old faucet-filter, I was more thrilled to see that the RO water reading was even cleaner than bottled water. Basically it was removing about 97% of the contaminants from my tap water!

I also replace my pre-filters every year, and I am always shocked to see what the system has removed. Yes, the picture below shows how my filters look after 1 year of treating city tap water. And to think that many people are still drinking water straight from the tap. Scary!

I can definitely recommend my RO-45 system as it has worked flawlessly for me for the past 4 years. Regardless of which brand or system you choose, I would strongly advise anyone interested in quality drinking water to install a reverse osmosis system for their home.
